This seven-story university building is located in Northeast Arizona. The large structure was constructed using large belled concrete piers drilled 12 feet below grade. Intersecting grade beams were installed between the columns for added support.
A major leak in the water supply system caused the building to fail at the columns. This created an upheaval in the floor slab system.
Working with a local General Contractor, Power Lift installed 330 steel pilings on existing and newly built structural beams in the lower level. We needed to increase the load-bearing capacity of the original concrete columns. Additionally, support was added for the 8-inch structural slab, which was to be repoured. Several tons of rebar reinforcing were incorporated into the new beams and floor slab.
Soil borings indicated that sufficient bearing was located at 45’. Final depths ranged from 45’-50’.
